Sanforte

The red grape variety (also San Forte) originates from Italy. The parentage is unknown. In the VIVC catalogue, Sanforte is mentioned as a synonym for the red grape variety Maiolica. It is possible that this is the same grape variety. The late-ripening, high-yielding vine is generally well resistant. It produces red wines similar to Sangiovese. The variety, which is threatened with extinction, is cultivated in tiny quantities in the regions of Puglia (Bari), Tuscany (Firenze) and Sardinia. In 2016, only 0.2 hectares of vines were reported under the Sanforte name in Italy (Kym Anderson statistics).
