San Martino

There are two grape varieties named after the municipality south of Lake Garda in Lombardy (Italy): Italy - Chatus x Dolcetto The red grape variety is a new breed between Chatus (Nebbiolo di Dronero) x Dolcetto. Synonyms include Dalmasso 7-21, Incrocio Dalmasso VII/21, and S. Martino, which was confirmed by DNA analyses conducted in 2017. The crossing took place in 1936 in Conegliano (Veneto) by the breeder Giovanni Dalmasso (1886-1974). With the same parents, the new breeds Passau and Valentino Nero were also created. The variety is cultivated in Piedmont. In 2016, 6 hectares of vineyard area were recorded with a declining trend (Kym Anderson). Italy - Pirovano 57 x Zibibbo (Muscat d’Alexandrie) The white grape variety is a new breed between Pirovano 57 (Bicane x Poete Matabon) x Zibibbo (Muscat d’Alexandrie). Synonyms include Pirovano 215 and S. Martino. The crossing took place in 1923 in Rome by Alberto Piròvano (1884-1973). The variety is used as a must and table grape.
