AOC classified municipality (Salgesch) in the Swiss canton of Valais. It lies on the border formed by the Raspille stream between Upper Valais (German) and Lower Valais (French). Salquenen was the first municipality to introduce the first Swiss Grand Cru wine and a controlled designation of origin in 1988.
More than 40 winegrowers cultivate around 200 hectares of vineyards with a high limestone and magnesium content, cultivating around 90% red wine varieties, mainly Pinot Noir. Until 2006, only Pinot Noir was permitted, but from 2007 the varieties Cornalin d'Aoste (Cornalin), Cornalin du Valais (Rouge du Pays) and Syrah were also authorised. The yield is limited to a maximum of 0.8 kg/m² of grapes. The must weight must be over 96 °Oechsle. Only grapes grown according to the KIP (Controlled Integrated Production) method are authorised.
