Popular name for single vineyard sites in the German Moselle region Saar (the name does not occur in the other growing regions). The name is derived from "Kuppe" (mountain or hilltop).
A vineyard with the name Kupp was first mentioned in documents as early as 1304 as the property of the Trier citizen Wilhelmus. At a wine auction in 1906, a Fuder "1904 Ayler Kupp" fetched the highest price ever paid on the Saar at that time, 15,030 Goldmarks. In the course of the land consolidation in 1973 some formerly independent sites were added.
