The white grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Rugginosa, Ruzninteina and Ruznintena. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2021, it comes from a presumably natural cross between Schiava Lombarda x unknown partner. The berries of the early-ripening vine turn a rusty red colour (arrugginito) when fully ripe, which is also where the name comes from. It yields a fruity, mineral-tasting white wine. The variety was once widespread in Emilia-Romagna. It was threatened with extinction and was reactivated by winemaker Italo Pedroni, who grows it near the city of Modena. In 2016, one hectare of vineyard was designated (Kym Anderson statistics).
