The winery is located in the municipality of Bolzano (Bozen) in the Italian wine-growing area of South Tyrol (Trentino-Alto Adige region). The traditional family is one of the oldest in South Tyrol and has been involved in winegrowing for many generations. The family name, which is derived from the porphyry, the red coloured rocks of the mountains around Bolzano, is evidence of this. The current company was founded in 1956 by Hans Rottensteiner and is now run jointly by his son Toni and grandson Hannes.

The vineyards cover an area of 90 hectares. They are planted with the white wine varietiesPinot Blanc, Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Grigio(Pinot Gris), Goldmuskateller, Silvaner and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as the red wine varieties Lagrein, Schiava Gentile, Cabernet Sauvignon andPinot Noir. The wines are produced under Terroirthe DOC designations St. Magdalener and Südtiroler (especially Lagrein). A speciality is the "Passito Cresta", a sweet wine made from dried Gewürztraminer grapes from the family owned Kristplonerhof. About 450,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.
