The red grape variety originates from Italy. Its parentage is unknown. It is generally regarded as the most common clone of the Rossola Nera variety, but DNA analyses carried out in 2001 showed that they are independent varieties. However, there is a parent-offspring relationship between the two varieties as well as with the Pignola Valtellinese variety. A somatic mutation with reddish berries is Rossolino Rosa. As Rossolino Nero is often grown in a mixed set with Rossola Nera, there is often confusion. The medium-ripening vine is susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis, but is resistant to downy mildew. The variety is cultivated in small quantities in the Valtellina valley in Lombardy. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
