DOC area (also Piceno) for red wines in the Italian region of Marche. It covers an extensive area between the Adriatic coast and the Apennines with around 4,800 hectares of vineyards in numerous municipalities in the four provinces of Ancona, Ascoli Piceno, Fermo and Macerata, excluding the production zone for the Rosso Conero DOC area. The relatively small Superiore area includes a southern part with the municipalities of Acquaviva Picena, Appignano, Ascoli Piceno, Castel di Lama, Castorano, Colli del Tronto, Cossignano, Grottammare, Monsampolo del Tronto, Monteprandone, Offida, Ripatransone, San Benedetto del Tronto and Spinetoli in the province of Ascoli Piceno. The red wine from this area is considered the successor of the ancient wine Hadrianum mentioned by the polymath Pliny the Elder (23-79).
