Rosacker

One of the sites classified as a Grand Cru in the municipality of Hunawihr in the French wine-growing region of Alsace (Haut-Rhin) within the Alsace Grand Cru appellation. The name is derived from the rose bushes (wild roses = rose hips) that used to be planted in abundance at the edge of the vineyards. Rosacker wines were first mentioned in a document in 1483. The east and south-east facing vineyard at 260 to 330 metres above sea level covers 26 hectares of vines on calcium- and magnesium-rich calcareous marl-clay soil. The main variety grown on around two thirds of the area is Riesling, as well as Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris. The relatively large area is divided into many smaller plots. The 1.7-hectare Clos Sainte-Hune vineyard owned by the Trimbach winery is considered to be one of the best in terms of quality. Other well-known producers include Cave de Ribeauvillé, Mader, Fréderic Mallo, Mittnacht-Klack and Slipp-Mack.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
