The red grape variety originates from Spain. Synonyms are De Rosa, Rojal and Royal. The parentage and whether there is a Rojal variety (listed in the VIVC catalogue) is not known. It should not be confused with the Jami Negro variety (with synonym Royal Tinta). The variety is grown in the region of La Mancha. In 2016, a total of 736 hectares of vines were reported, with a strong downward trend (Kym Anderson statistics).
