The white grape variety originates from the border region Italy/Slovenia. Synonyms are Avola, Erbula, Gargania, Garganica, Rabola, Rabiola, Rebolla, Ribolla Bianca, Ribolla Gialla di Rosazzo, Ribolla di Rosazzo and Ribuèle (Italy); Jarbola, Jerbula, Ribola Bijela (Croatia); Garganija, Garganja, Grganc, Rebula, Rebula Bela, Teran Bijeli, Zelena Rebula (Slovenia). According to DNA analyses carried out in 2020, it originates from a presumably natural cross between unknown parent variety x Gouais Blanc.
