Raya

Spanish meaning for "line" or "stripe". One to four rayas (diagonal chalk lines) on the barrel are used in Jerez to classify the wines after fermentation and thus determine the future sherry type. Raya, however, is also used as a synonym for inferior wine qualities. In some cases, the name for these strokes is also called "palo". See also under Sherry at Palo Cortado.
