Rangen

One of the sites classified as Grand Cru in Alsace within the Alsace Grand Cru appellation (Haut-Rhin) west of Mulhouse (Mulhouse). The southernmost Alsatian site is counted among the best of the 51 Grand Cru. The high quality of the wines was already mentioned in documents in the 13th century. Among other things, the pilgrims who came to the collegiate church of St. Theobald in Thann praised the wine. However, the church did not approve of this, the theologian Sebastian Münster (1488-1552) attributed diabolic influence to the wine. The German satirist Sebastian Brant (1457-1521) wrote that Hercules, on his travels through Alsace, drank so much of the Rangen wine that he fell asleep and forgot his club when he woke up.
