The red grape variety is an interspecific new breeding between Early Purple x Jaeger. Genes from Vitis aestivalis, Vitis cinerea, Vitis lincecumii and Vitis vinifera are present. The hybrid was crossed in 1897 in the USA by the botanist Thomas Volney Munson (1843-1913). No stocks were recorded in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
