Quarter

Old liquid hollow measure (also quarter), which originally corresponded to the fourth part of a larger measure. The locally different volumes were 0.27 (Bavaria), 0.94 (Brunswick), 0.8 (Bremen), 0.9 (Hamburg, Lübeck), 0.97 (Hannover) and 1.145 (Prussia). The British quarter in turn corresponds to 1.14 and the US quarter to 0.946 litres. However, Quart is also the short form of Quart de Bouteille. See also under hollow measures.
