The red grape variety originates from Italy. The approximately 100 synonyms testify to its great age and widespread distribution in Italy but also in many other countries. The most important are numerous names with Nebbiolo and an additional part of the name, such as Nebbiolo del Piemonte, Nebbiolo di Barbaresco, Nebbiolo di Campione and Nebbiolo di Nizza, as well as Barbesino, Barolo, Brunenta, Bruneta, Chiavennasca, Farinella, Femmina, Lampia, Marchesana, Martesana, Melasca, Melaschetto, Melascone, Michet, Monferrina, Morsano di Caraglio, Nibio, Nibiol, Nubiola, Nubiolum, Picotender, Picotendre, Picotendro, Picotèner, Picotenero, Picoutendro, Picoutendro Maschio, Picoutener, Picutener, Poctener, Pruinè, Prunent, Pugnet, Prunent, Rossetta, Spagna, Spana, Spana Commune, Spana Piccola, Spanna, Spanna Grossa, Tandis and Uva Spana.
It must not be confused with the varieties Chatus (Nebbiolo di Dronero, Nebbiolo Pairolè), Croatina (Nebbiolo di Gattinara), Dolcetto (Nebbiolo), Freisa or Nebbiolo Rosé, despite seemingly suggestive synonyms or morphological or name similarities. The white variety Arneis (with synonym Nebbiolo Bianco) is not a colour mutation (or vice versa). There are four different Nebbiolo varieties/clones:
