A colloquial term (with no legal significance in wine law) for wines marketed under a brand name that have a specific flavour profile or a wine style with a characteristic, distinctive character. They are becoming increasingly important in the wake of globalisation. A defining feature is the aim to achieve a flavour profile that is largely independent of the vintage and as consistent as possible, which is specifically designed and produced to meet consumer preferences. Branded wines can be marketed either as a retail or catering trade’s own-brand (private label) or under a wine producer’s own brand.
