Prairie Star

The white grape variety (also ES 3-24-7) is a complex interspecific new breeding between Elmer Swenson 2-7-13 x Elmer Swenson 2-8-1 (Alpenglow). It contains genes from Vitis aestivalis, Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis riparia, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed in 1984 by the American breeder Elmer Swenson (1913-2004) on his farm in Wisconsin. The vine is extremely resistant to frost down to minus 38 °Celsius, but moderately susceptible to powdery mildew, anthracnose and black rot. It yields a rather neutral white wine with floral aromas, but lacking foxtone despite Labrusa genes. The variety is grown in the USA (20 ha) and in Canada (3 ha). In 2016, a total of 23 hectares of vines were reported (Kym Anderson statistics).

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
