The red grape variety originates from Lower Styria (Austria-Hungary) in Slovenia, although the name incorrectly suggests Portugal. The hypothesis of the origin Portugal is based on a document in Gumpoldskirchen (Lower Austria). In this document it is stated that the baron of Vöslau, Baron von Fries, brought the variety from Porto to Bad Vöslau in 1772.
