Portoghese

Synonym (also Porthogese, Porthogese Nero, Porthogeze, Portoghese Nero, Portogheze, Portughese, Portughese Nero, Portugieser, Portuguese, Portugizer) for the grape variety Blauer Portugieser; see there.

The red grape variety originates from Lower Styria in Slovenia (former Austro-Hungarian monarchy), although the name incorrectly suggests Portugal. There are over a hundred synonyms, which indicates its great age. The most important, grouped alphabetically by country, are Autrichien, Portugais Bleu (France); Porthogese, Porthogese Nero, Porthogeze, Portoghese, Portoghese Nero (Italy); Early Burgundy (California); Crna Kraljevina, Imbrina, Portugizac Crni (Croatia); Badner, Badener, Feslauertraube, Garidelitraube, Portugieser, Portugieser Blau, Portugieser, Vöslaner, Vöslauer (Austria); Perequita, Português Azul (Portugal); Modrý Portugal, Portugalkja, Portugalské Modré(Slovakia, Czech Republic); Modra Portugalka, Portugalka (Slovenia); Kékoportó(Hungary).

Origin, descent & descendants

The hypothesis of the Portuguese origin is based on a document in Gumpoldskirchen (Lower Austria). According to this document, the Vöslau castle owner Baron von Fries brought the variety from Porto to Bad Vöslau in 1772. In 1887, the ampelographer Hermann Goethe (1837-1911) hypothesised that the Portuguese variety Moreto do Alentejo was identical.
