Portalegre

Sub-area named after the city of the same name near the Spanish border within the Portuguese DOC and Alentejo region (older bottle labels may still show DOC Portalegre). The mostly alcohol-rich red and white wines are made from the local grape varieties Aragonez, Assario, Fernão Pires, Galego, Grand Noir, Manteúdo, Periquita (Castelão Francês), Roupeiro and Trincadeira. The best red wine is that of the famous Fonseca Winery.
