The red grape variety (also New York 4265) is an interspecific new variety between Herbert x Worden(Concord - open flowered). It contains genes from Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed in 1903 by the breeder S. A. Beach at the Vine Breeding Institute of Cornell University in Geneva, New York State. In 2010 no stocks were reported (Statistics Kym Anderson). Pontiac (also Pontack) is also a synonym for the dyer grape Teinturier du Cher.
