The red grape variety is a mutation of Black Queen (Bailey x Golden Queen); thus, genes from Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii and Vitis vinifera are included. According to an unproven hypothesis, it is said to be identical to the Pione variety, contrary to this official origin. The hybrid was named after the Thai winegrower Nong Pok, who found it in the early 1980s in the Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima province. In Thailand, the quantities are probably included under Black Queen, because in 2016 no stock was reported under Pokdum (Kym Anderson)
