The red grape variety originates from Croatia, where it is cultivated in the north of Dalmatia. Synonyms are Brajda, Brajda Mala, Brajdica, Brajdica Crna, Brajdica Mala, Bratkovina, Jurkovica, Malvasia Nera Antica, Marasovka, Plajka, Plavinac, Plavinac Mali, Plavinac Srednja, Plavina Crna, Plavina Mala, Plavina Sitna, Plavina Velika, Plavka, Plavka Mala, Plavka Smokvicka, Plavina Sitna and Plavka Velika. According to DNA analyses carried out most recently in 2018, the variety originated from a presumably natural cross between Tribidrag (Crljenak Kastelanski, Primitivo) x Lagorthi (Verdeca). It should not be confused with the Plavac Mali variety due to morphological similarities or seemingly suggestive synonyms. Nothing is known about possible relations to the white varieties Lipolist (Plavina Blanche, Plavinac) or Plavina Bijela. The medium-late ripening, high-yielding vine is susceptible to downy mildew and botrytis. It yields light red wines with soft tannins, which are mostly blended. In 2016, 683 hectares of vines were recorded (Kym Anderson).
