The first mention of Picapoll Nigri dates back to 1384. The parentage is unknown. It should not be confused with the Calitor Noir (Piquepoul de Fronton) or Cinsaut (Piquepoul d'Uzès) varieties due to some of the same synonyms or morphological or name similarities. See also under Piquepoul.
