Piquepoul noir

The red grape variety comes from France. Synonyms are Blue Pique Poule, Kék Piquepoul, Languedocien, Pical, Pical Negro, Pical Polho, Pical Polo, Picapoll, Picapolla, Picapoll Negro, Picapoll Tinta, Picpoul, Picpoule, Pikpul Chery, Piquepoule and Piquerette Noir. The first mention was already in 1384 under Picapoll Nigri, of which the colour varieties Piquepoul Blanc and Piquepoul Gris are mutated (see under Piquepoul). In spite of apparently indicative synonyms or morphological or name similarities, it must not be confused with the varieties Calitor Noir (Piquepoul de Fronton) or Cinsaut (Piquepoul d'Uzès). This medium to late-maturing, fairly high-yielding vine is susceptible to botrytis and powdery mildew. It produces bright red, alcohol-rich, aromatic wines, which are also very suitable for the production of rosé wines. The variety is authorised in the wines of the appellations Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône, Grignan-les-Adhémar and Ventoux (Rhône), and Minervois (Languedoc), among others. In France it is cultivated on 58 hectares. There are also other stands in Spain, with four hectares in the region of Catalonia, and Portugal, with six hectares, where it is permitted in Vinho Verde. In 2016, the total area under vines was 69 hectares (Kym Anderson statistics).
