The red grape variety (breeding no. Kuhlmann 191-1) is an interspecific new breeding between Millardet et Grasset 101-14 S.P. (Riparia x Rupestris ) x Goldriesling (1). It contains genes from Vitis riparia, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed at the beginning of the 20th century at the Oberlin Institute in Colmar-Alsace by the breeder Eugène Kuhlmann (1858-1932). By the way, the same parents also produced the six new varieties Etoile I, Etoile II, Léon Millot, Lucie Kuhlmann, Maréchal Foch and Maréchal Joffre. The early ripening vine is resistant to frost and fungal diseases. It yields velvety red wines with soft tannins. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
