Piccola Nera

The red grape variety originates from the border region Italy (Gorizia)-Slovenia (Goricia). Synonyms are Negra Tenera, Nera Tenera, Piccola (Italy); Cerni Kleščec, Mala Cerna, Malocrn (Slovenia). It should not be confused with the varieties Schiava Grossa or Piculit Neri due to morphological similarities. According to an unverifiable hypothesis, an ancestor was part of the ancient wine Pucinum. It was described by the ampelographer Franz Xaver Trummer (1800-1858) in his catalogue of grape varieties in 1855. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2020, it is probably a natural cross between Gouais Blanc x Vulpea. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The late-ripening vine yields a light red, simple red wine. It is mainly cultivated in the province of Trieste in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in the Carso DOC area, as well as in the province of Trento in Trentino Alto Adige. In 2016, 6 hectares of vines were recorded in Italy (Kym Anderson)- Small populations are also said to exist in Slovenia.
