Born in Piedmont, Italian journalist Carlo Petrini (*1949) studied sociology in Trento and then became involved in politics. From 1977, he wrote about food and drink in Italian magazines and was involved in the founding of Gambero Rosso, of which he was co-editor for many years. In the early 1980s, Petrini founded the "Libera e Benemerita Associazione Amici del Barolo" (Free and Well-Deserved Association of Friends of Barolo), which was triggered by the discovery of the adulteration of this red wine with methanol.
This association eventually gave rise to the "Arcigola" association. In 1989, Petrini finally founded the Slow Food association. The reason for this was the opening of a McDonald's branch in Piazza Navona in Rome in 1986. This square is surrounded by many ancient and baroque buildings. In 2006, Petrini relinquished the presidency of Slow Food Italia, but remained president of Slow Food International. See also under winegrowing personalities.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
