Pervaporation

Technical membrane process for the purification of liquid mixtures with which certain substances can be removed. For each application, the membrane (separation layer) must be selected in which the contaminating mixture component dissolves much better than the recyclable material or the component present in excess or remaining after the process. After penetrating the membrane, the contaminant evaporates on its back side. The process is also used for the alcohol reduction of wine, in which case the "contaminating mixture component" is ethanol. See also a list of all processes under the keyword vinification.
