The red grape variety comes from Italy. Synonyms are Cattarrato Rouge, Guarnaccia Nera, Nieddera, Niuru, Perricone Nera, Perricone Nero, Perricone Noir, Picnatelo, Pignateddu, Pignatelle, Pignatello, Pirricone Nera, Pirricuni, Quarnaccia, Tuccarinu and Tuccarinu di Catania. It must not be confused with the Barbera, Mammolo, Nerello Cappuccio, Nerello Mascalese, Magliocco Dolce, Nieddera or Sangiovese varieties, despite the fact that synonyms or morphological similarities may appear to indicate this. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2007, a parent-offspring relationship was established with the Sangiovese variety.
