According to DNA analyses carried out in 2007 (based on 38 DNA markers) and 2021, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Sangiovese x unknown parent variety. It should not be confused with the Barbera, Mammolo, Nerello Cappuccio, Nerello Mascalese, Magliocco Dolce, Nieddera or Sangiovese varieties due to some of the same synonyms or morphological similarities.
