Pellegrino

The Sicilian winery in Marsala (Trapani province) was founded in 1880 by the notary Paolo Pellegrino. His son Carlo married Josephine Despagne, the daughter of a wine producer from Sauternes in France, who brought some knowledge to the business. Under his leadership the company developed into a leading company in Sicily. Today it is run by his son Carlo II. There are two large wineries in Marsala and a third one was opened on the island of Pantelleria in 1992. The vineyard estate is divided between Gazzerotta, Kelbi, Ramisella, Rinazzo and San Nicola, with a part in the WWF Park "Gorghi Tondi" and covers a total of more than 300 hectares of vineyards.

The local varieties Grillo, Inzolia, Malvasia Bianca, Nero d'Avola and Zibibo (Muscat d'Alexandrie) are cultivated, as well as the international varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah. The different varieties of Marsala (which account for about a quarter of the production), the sweet IGT wines and the DOC wines of Pantelleria are produced under the "Pellegrino" brand. The table wines (VdT) and sweet and fortified wines are marketed under the "Duca di Castelmonte" brand. Around seven million bottles of wine are produced annually. A large part of it is exported to Great Britain, France, USA, Japan, South Korea and Switzerland.
