The winery is located in the municipality of Huete (province of Cuenca) in the Spanish region of Castilla-La Mancha in the DO area of Uclés. The name refers to an ancient Roman road that led from the town of Opta (now Huete), after which a wine is also named, to the Mediterranean harbours for the transport of the mineral lapis specularis. From here you can overlook the valley of the Rio Mayor river. The winery was founded in 1980 by the couple Francisco Uribes and Celia Madero (who had previously run a pharmacy) and the first Garnacha Tinta vines were planted. However, the wines were only marketed under the name "Calzadilla" from the 1992 vintage onwards. Today, the business is run by daughter Paula Uribes.
As honorary chairman of the Domäne Wachau, it is the easiest and quickest way for me to access the wein.plus encyclopaedia when I have questions. The certainty of receiving well-founded and up-to-date information here makes it an indispensable guide.
