Othello Solonis

This grape variety (also known as Solonis x Othello 1613, 1613 Couderc and 1613 C) is an interspecific hybrid of Solonis and Othello. It contains genes from Vitis longii (Vitis acerifolia), Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was created in 1881 in France by the ‘ grower ’ Georges Couderc (1850–1928).

Characteristics

This vigorous vine roots easily and has good grafting affinity. It is resistant to phylloxera and also exhibits some resistance to nematodes. However, it is considered susceptible to calcium-induced iron chlorosis. The vine was primarily used as a rootstock. It is also of importance in plant breeding and served, amongst other things, as source material for the American rootstock ‘Freedom’.
