Ofthalmo

The grape variety with red berries originates from Cyprus. The name means "ox-eye" because of the shape of the berries. Synonyms are Oftalmo, Ophtalmon, Optalmo, Pephtalmo and Pophtalmo. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2005, it is closely related to the Cypriot variety Spourtiko. However, the parentage is unknown. The medium to late ripening, high-yielding vine produces aromatic, low-acid wines with a light red colour. These are usually blended with the local varieties Maratheftiko and Mavro, or also Cabernet Sauvignon. The variety is also used as table grape. The area under cultivation in 2010 was 141 hectares; no stock was reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
