History

Modern viticulture in North Dakota began in the early 2000s. In 2001, the state Farm Winery Law came into force, which, like the Farm Winery Act in South Dakota, made it easier to operate small wineries on an agricultural basis. The climatic conditions required the cultivation of particularly frost-hardy grape varieties. New varieties from the University of Minnesota made an important contribution.
