The state in the north of the USA with the capital Bismarck covers 183,123 km². It borders the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba to the north, Minnesota to the east (separated by the Red River), South Dakota to the south and Montana to the west. North Dakota was admitted to the Union as the 39th state after the division of the Dakota Territory in 1889. Over 40% of the population has German roots.

Modern viticulture in North Dakota began in the early 2000s. In 2001, the state Farm Winery Law came into force, which, like the Farm Winery Act in South Dakota, made it easier to operate small wineries on an agricultural basis. The climatic conditions required the cultivation of particularly frost-hardy grape varieties. New varieties from the University of Minnesota made an important contribution.
