Noiret

This red grape variety (also NY 73-0136-17) is a complex interspecific new hybrid between New York 65-0467-08 (Chancellor x NY 32-277) x Steuben. It contains genes from Vitis aestivalis, Vitis cinerea, Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis riparia, Vitis rupestris, and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed in 1973 by breeders B. Reisch, R. S. Luce, B. Bordelon, and Th. Henick-Kling at the Vine Breeding Institute of Cornell University in Geneva, New York State. The medium to late maturing vine is moderately susceptible to powdery mildew, as well as resistant to frost down to minus 26 °Celsius. It produces dark-coloured red wines with fine tannins and aromas of green and black pepper, raspberries and mint. The variety is grown in the US states of New York, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. In 2016, a total of 25 hectares of vines were reported (Kym Anderson statistics).
