The red grape variety originates from France. Synonyms are Castet, Engrunat, Gros Machouquet, Gros Verdau, Machoupet, Machouquet, Matioupet, Matiouquet, Maturana Tinta de Navarrete and Nicouleau. It should not be confused with the Béquignol Noir or Fer varieties, despite seemingly suggestive synonyms or morphological similarities.
