The red grape variety is an interspecific new breeding between Campbell Early x Niagara White, the name was formed from the parents. Synonyms are California L 11-3 and Niabell (4N). It contains genes from Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera. The crossing of the hybrids took place in 1942 by the breeder Dr. Harold P. Olmo Harold (1909-2006) at the California Agricultural Experiment Station, the release took place in 1958. The variety is resistance to downy mildew. It is primarily used to produce semi-sweet wines with Foxton, but mainly table grape are produced. The variety is widespread in many USA. There is also an early ripening grape varieties version called Early Niabell (also California L 11-2). In 2016, however, no stocks were reported for both varieties (Kym Anderson Kym).
