The state on the mid-Atlantic east coast of the USA with the capital Trenton covers around 22,591 km². It is bordered to the north and east by the state of New York, to the west by Pennsylvania (separated by the Delaware River) and to the south by Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean. New Jersey is one of the thirteen founding states of the USA and was admitted to the Union as the 3rd state in 1787.

Viticulture is documented in New Jersey as early as 1787. Initially, development remained low, but gained importance in the 19th century, among other things through the traditional Renault Winery (founded in 1864), which still exists today. Until 1981, viticulture was severely restricted by low production ceilings and few licences. The New Jersey Farm Winery Act lifted these restrictions and led to growth.
