Neusiedl am See

The wine-growing community in the Austrian province of Burgenland lies 133 metres above sea level on the northern shore of Lake Neusiedl between the foothills of the Leitha Mountains and the Parndorfer Platte (Wagram). The Hungarian Queen Maria (1505-1558) granted the village (along with Jois and Rust) the right to label its wine barrels with the initial letter "N" (for Neusiedlersee) due to their excellent quality.

Restructuring

The vineyards in the municipality of Neusiedl am See used to all belong to the Neusiedlersee wine-growing region, in which this municipality is geographically located. In 2016, Burgenland underwent a reorganisation in which the former Neusiedlersee-Hügelland wine-growing region was abandoned and replaced (not congruently) by the Leithaberg wine-growing region. Some vineyards from Neusiedl am See were assigned to this area.
