Neszmély

The wine-growing region is located in north-western Hungary north of Lake Balaton (Plattensee) near Slovakia. In the 19th century, the Esterházy family planted vineyards here and founded modern viticulture. Today, the Hilltop winery near Neszmély is equipped with the most modern facilities. The vineyards on sandy and loess soil cover around 1,900 hectares of vines. The most important grape varieties are Chardonnay, Ezerjó, Irsai Olivér, Leányka, Olasz Rizling (Welschriesling), Rizlingszilváni (Müller-Thurgau), Sauvignon Blanc, Szürkebarat (Pinot Gris) and Fűszeres Tramini (Gewürztraminer). Mainly acidic, full-bodied white wines with ageing potential are produced. Well-known producers are Hilltop Neszmély and Szöllősi Pincészet.
