The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Anrè, Nerello, Uva da Can and Uva da Cane. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2006, there is a parent-progeny relationship to the Lambrusca di Alessandria and Uvalino varieties. The variety is cultivated in very small quantities in Piedmont. However, no stock was reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
