The Republic of Nepal (Saṅghīya Loktāntrik Gaṇatantra Nepāl) in South Asia with its capital Kathmandu covers 147,516 km². It borders China to the north and India to the east, south and west. To the north and east lies a large part of the Himalayas, including Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world at 8,848 metres. A republic was proclaimed in the former kingdom in 2008. In Jonsom in the Annapurna massif, two hectares of vines were planted with European grape varieties at 2,750 metres above sea level in 1992. This makes it the highest vineyard in the world.
