The winery is located in the municipality of Heimersheim in the German wine region Ahr. The Nelles family has been involved in viticulture for over 500 years. The year 1479N mentioned on the bottle labels refers to the documented mention of a Peter Nelis as the tenant of a "wyngartz an der buysch portzen." The current owner, Thomas Nelles, completed an apprenticeship as a vintner with Julius Wasem in Ingelheim and also worked at Adeneuer before studying viticulture and fruit growing in Weinsberg. After graduating, he took over his father's winery in the early 1970s. Shortly thereafter, the estate house, built in 1950, had to make way for a road. When the Heimersheim cooperative merged with Ahr Winzer eG in 1976 and abandoned its operations in Heimersheim, Nelles had the building demolished except for the hotel and rebuilt the operation on the old cellar.
