The winery is located in the municipality of Heimersheim in the German wine-growing region of Ahr. The Nelles family has been growing grapes for over 500 years. The date 1479N on the bottle labels refers to the documentary mention of a Peter Nelis as the tenant of a "wyngartz an der buysch portzen". The current owner, Thomas Nelles, completed an apprenticeship as a winemaker with Julius Wasem in Ingelheim and also worked for Adeneuer before studying viticulture and fruit growing in Weinsberg. After graduating, he took over his father's winery in the early 1970s. Only a little later, the estate house, which was only built in 1950, had to make way for a road. When the Heimersheim cooperative merged with the Ahr Winzer eG in 1976 and gave up its premises in Heimersheim, Nelles had the building demolished except for the hotel and rebuilt the business on the old cellar.
