Neipperger Schlossberg

See under Schlossberg.

Common single-location name in Germany. It is usually derived from a manorial building (which may no longer exist) on the top of a hill.

Achkarren/Oberrotweil - Baden (Kaiserstuhl)

The upper part of this single vineyard below the Höhingen castle ruins was converted into vineyards in 1819 by blasting away the steep rock faces. The vineyards, which are aligned in the form of four amphitheatres facing west to south-east, but predominantly south, at an altitude of 190 to 320 metres above sea level with a slope of 20 to 80%, cover 80 hectares of vineyards. The very large and therefore heterogeneous site in terms of soil is divided into four areas: Böhmischberg, Büchsenberg, Schlossberg and Schneckenberg.

The soils consist of dark, weathered, skeleton-rich volcanic rock with a partly artificially applied loess layer. The main varieties grown here are Riesling, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Silvaner. The Augit, Dr Heger, Freiherr von Gleichenstein, Keller Franz, St. Remigius, Wagner Peter, Waßmer Fritz, Wassmer Martin and Winzergenossenschaft Achkarren wineries, for example, have shares in the site.

Layen Castle - Nahe

The south-facing vineyards with slopes of 5 to 40% cover 15 hectares of vines on clayey loam soil. Here, Riesling and Pinot varieties are cultivated. The Forster Georg, Joh. Bapt. Schäfer, Pieroth, Schlossgut Diel and Weingut in den Zehn Morgen wineries, for example, have shares in the vineyards.

Castell - Franconia (Steigerwald)

The two ancestral castles of the Counts of Castell once stood here. Around 1266, the counts' property was divided up and the most important vineyards in Castell were mentioned for the first time in the deed of division. Today, only a stair tower remains of the castle built in the 16th century.

The south, south-west and west-facing, basin-shaped vineyard at an altitude of 300 to 390 metres above sea level with a slope of 40 to 70% covers 4.5 hectares of vines. The soils, which are grey-blue on the surface and prone to erosion, consist of gypsum keuper, calcareous marl and grusy claystone with intercalations of alabaster. The Silvaner, Riesling and Rieslaner varieties are cultivated here. The vineyard is the sole property of the Fürstlich Castell'sches Domänenamt winery. The Reitsteig site is located in the lower centre of the Schlossberg slope.

Cochem - Moselle (Cochem Castle)

The south-facing vineyard lies directly beneath the walls of the Imperial Castle of Cochem. Throughout history, this hill and the castle have repeatedly been the scene of fierce battles and sieges. On the steep vineyards 70 metres above the Moselle, the vines are rooted in friable blue slate with little fine soil. In 1998, the steep slope was completely replanted in terraces at great expense. The main varieties cultivated here are Riesling and Pinot Noir.
