The red grape variety is an interspecific new breeding between Merlot Noir x Amurensis Ruprecht. Synonyms are Negra de Yaloven, Negru de Jaloveni, Negru de Jloven, Negru de Ialoveni and Negrul de Jaloven. There are genes of Vitis amurensis and Vitis vinifera included. The hybrid was crossed in Moldova in 1967 by the breeder Nicolae I. Guzun. In 2016, 141 hectares of vineyard area were designated (statistics Kym Anderson).
