The red grape variety originates from Italy. According to DNA analyses, it is a direct descendant of Nebbiolo, the second parent is unknown. It must not be confused with the varieties Cot, Juan García, Montanera di Perosa, and Negrara Trentina (all with synonym Negrera). In 2016, no stock was reported under the name Negrera (Kym Anderson).
