Neethlingshof Estate

The winery (estate) is located in the South African wine district of Stellenbosch. Impressive is the one kilometre long pine avenue leading to the estate building. A restaurant is attached to the estate. It was already founded in 1692 by the German Willem Lubbe. Since 1985 it is owned by the German ex-banker Hans-Joachim Schreiber (Lusan Holding), as well as the sister estate Stellenzicht. The winegrowing pioneer Günter Brözel was significantly involved in the rebuilding. Since 2003, the cellar master De Wet Viljoen, who studied microbiology, viticulture and oenology at the University of Stellenbosch, has been responsible for the estate. The vineyards comprise 210 hectares of vines, not all of which are yet in production. They are planted with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinotage, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Shiraz. When planting young vines, care is taken to ensure that they do not become accustomed to artificial irrigation too early. The "Riesling Noble Late Harvest" (noble rotten berries) and the Bordeaux blend "Lord Neethling Reserve" are the flagship wines. Almost one million bottles of wine are produced annually.
