French term (literally translated as muzzle) for the wire basket or wire mesh used to secure the cork in a sparkling wine. The German term for this is agraffe. The invention is attributed to the Frenchman Adolphe Jacquesson (1800-1876), the son of the founder of the famous champagne house. This invention made a decisive contribution to the safe storage and transport of sparkling wine bottles. There is a collector's scene for these agraffes and capsules; see Placomusophilia.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
