The appellation for table grape production is located in the southern section of the French wine-growing region of Rhône. It comprises 100,000 hectares of vineyards on slopes with calcareous and clay-limestone sedimentary rock between Mont Ventoux and Avignon in a total of 56 municipalities in the Département of Vaucluse. Artificial irrigation is required for more than 60% of the plots. The AOC classification only applies to wines made from the Muscat d'Hamburg variety. The almost identical Ventoux appellation applies to red wines, rosé wines and white wines made from local varieties.
